Das Ali Akbar College of Music in Basel ist über die letzten 25 Jahre eines der wichtigsten Zentren für indische Musikstudien ausserhalb von Indien geworden. Es wurde vom legendären Meister Ali Akbar Khan im Jahr 1985 gegründet und bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 2009 von ihm geleitet.

Swapan Chaudhuri - „Die kontrollierte Virtuosität von Swapan‘s Spiel machte immer den Eindruck, dass nichts ihn stoppen könnte, sofern er es nicht wollte. Was für eine Vorstellung er gab!“ SF Chronicle. Swapan Chaudhuri ist ein Phänomen in der Welt der klassischen indischen Musik. Musiker ehren ihn als einen der meist respektiertesten Tabla Spieler, er verdient höchste Aufmerksamkeit auf der ganzen Welt. Er wurde mit dem renommierten Sangeet Natak Academy Award der indischen Regierung und dem American Academy of Artists Award ausgezeichnet. Beide sind Künstlern vorbehalten, die das höchste künstlerische Level erreicht haben. Er wurde nominiert für die hoch geschätzte International Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame.

Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri is a phenomenon in the arena of Indian Classical Music. Musicians honor him as one of the most highly respected Tabla players, worthy of highest regard all over the world. He is a recipient of the prestigious Sangeet Natak Academy Award from the Government of India, and the American Academy of Artists Award, both of which are reserved only for those artists who have attained the highest level of artistry. He has received the Excellence in Performing Arts Award from the Global Indian Congress in San Francisco, and has been nominated to the esteemed International Percussive Arts Society’s Hall of Fame.
Trio Chemirani – Die klassische persische Trommel, die Zarb, stammt ursprünglich aus dem Norden des Irans. Auf ihrem Weg durch Afrika und Asien, wurde sie bei Musikern aus der Türkei, Osteuropa und Nordafrika bekannt. Seit die Zarb mehr mit den einzelnen Fingern anstelle der Handballen gespielt wird, ist aus einem der wichtigsten Percussions-Instrumente des Mittleren Ostens auch ein melodisches Instrument geworden. Mit ebenso vielen Noten wie bei einem Piano, sind die Kombinationen zwischen Melodie und Rhythmus grenzenlos. Djamchid Chemirani lernte das Zarb-Spiel im Iran mit dem grossen Zarb-Meister Hossein Teherani, dessen revolutionäre Arbeit die Zarb von einem Begleitinstrument zu einem Soloinstrument machte. Djamchid‘s vielversprechendste und inspirierteste Schüler waren keine anderen, als seine zwei Söhne, Keyvan und Bijan. Sie gründeten das Chemirani Zarb Trio und unterhalten seither an ihren Konzerten ein immer begeistertes Publikum.
The classical Persian drum, the Zarb, originated in northern Iran, before travelling across Africa and Asia where it became popular with musicians from Turkey, Eastern Europe and North Africa. One of the Middle East’s major instruments of percussion, it is also considered a melodic instrument, since it’s played the fingers rather than the palm of the hand. With as many notes as a piano, the combinations between melody and rhythm are limitless. Djmachid Chemirani learnt to play in Iran with the great zarb master, Hossein Teherani, whose revolutionary work changed the zarb from an accompaniment to a solo instrument. Recognised himself as a master of the classical school, Djamchid Chemirani was also seen as a modernist, open to new ideas and styles. When he decided to leave Iran and move to France, he was already one of the only two living zarb masters in the world. Not only a great musician but also a devoted teacher, Djamchid”s most promising and inspiring pupils were none other than his two sons, Keyvan and Bijan. This new generation would broaden their scope to include other Middle-Eastern frame drums such as the Daf, Bandir and Udu. In 1999, Djmachid decided that his sons” skills were sufficient for them to turn professional. They founded the Chemirani Zarb Trio and have been entertaining delighted audiences at their concerts ever since.

Musik des europäischen Mittelalters und der nordindischen Tradition haben weit zurückliegende, gemeinsame Wurzeln. Bei aller Verschiedenheit zeigt sich das noch in der Organisation des Tonvorrats in sogenannten Modi. International renommierte Spezialisten der Schola Cantorum Basiliensis und der traditionellen Musik Indiens wagen einen Brückenschlag zwischen den Kulturen. Struktur und Improvisation, sinnliche Melodien und komplexe Rhythmen, Virtuosität und Leidenschaft kennzeichnen die faszinierende Begegnung der beiden Welten.
